Vincent Kompany testimonial: Why is star not playing in his own Man City testimonial? | Football | Sport

Vincent Kompany will not play in his own testimonial on Wednesday night after picking up a hamstring injury.

The Belgium defender left Manchester City this summer to become player manager at Anderlecht.

Kompany will return to the Eithad on Wednesday for his testimonial, however, the defender will not take part.

The 33-year-old revealed he’s not fit enough to play in the game involving Manchester City and Manchester United legends as he cannot risk aggravating a hamstring injury.

“Unfortunately I won’t be starting tonight or playing. It’s typical of me, right? I’m usually just there for the end of the season,” Kompany said.

“I’ve got a slight hamstring injury. I couldn’t risk it tonight.

“We’ve got plenty of awesome players to be watching today and in many ways it is about a celebration to say goodbye, it doesn’t need to be on the pitch as such.

“In the same way, we are doing it for an unbelievable cause. That takes priority.

“I’ll be there for David Silva and Kun Aguero’s testimonials.”

Kompany also revealed his plan to put Leroy Sane up against Gary Neville fell trough after the German’s ACL injury earlier this season.

He said: “There are so many old faces, and I want to see who is still in shape and who is not anymore! I remember a lot of conversations in the dressing room… ‘What are you going to do when you stop playing?’

“Nigel de Jong is still playing, so I’ll have to wait for another time with him, but I think he was going to go the other way! Those you think go one way, they don’t, and the people you think go the other way, they don’t!

“I’m looking forward to seeing whose in shape mainly, and reminiscing about the stories we still remember from the dressing room.

“It’s unfortunate that Leroy Sane is out with a knee injury, because I would have put him on Gary Neville. My goal was to put the fastest winger I could find on Gary Neville’s side! Unless he goes and hides at centre-back, we’ll see.”
