The north Londoners have been keeping tabs on the talented 19-year-old defender well over a year now.
Tottenham were hopeful of luring the youngster to north London but faced an uphill battle to do so following the news of Barcelona’s interest in the centre-back.
And Barcelona’s pursuit of the Holland international has prompted the Spurs hierarchy to end their interest in Ajax’s prized asset.
That decision has come following the club’s realisation the defender will look to join one of Europe’s big boys following his stellar campaign with the Dutch powerhouses, according to the Daily Star.
De Ligt has played a pivotal role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals, scoring the winner against Juventus on Tuesday night to book his team’s place in the last four of Europe’s elite club competition.
Juventus themselves have been impressed by the whizkid, who they view as a long-term replacement for Giorgio Chiellini.
German giants Bayern Munich are also admirers of the Dutchman, though it’s understood Barcelona are the front runners to acquire his services.
Should Barcelona snap up De Light, Juventus are expected to turn their attention to signing Samuel Umtiti from the Catalan giants.
That could greatly affect the summer transfer plans of Arsenal and Manchester United, who are both weighing up moves for the France international.
Ajax’s stellar performances this season have surprisingly guided them to their first European Cup semi-final since 1996.
And De Ligt is refusing to rule out the team’s chances of defying the odds and winning the entire tournament.
“Can we can go on to win the competition? Well, we are in the semi-finals now,” De Light said after Ajax’s win in Turin on Tuesday. “And we have eliminated two of the favourites in the last two rounds.
“The next games will be very difficult, but so were these ones. So who knows?
“I can’t describe the emotions we are feeling now – it’s unbelievable. We don’t know what we can achieve but we are never satisfied.”
He later added: “There’s so much potential in this team, we are all still quite young and you see us grow every game.
“We dominated after the break and were well worth our victory. In fact, we probably should have won by more.”
