In a rain-affected game at Arbroath that was reduced to nine overs per side, Thailand beat Netherlands by 30 runs to kickstart their journey in the 2020 T20 World Cup Qualifier. Opting to bat first, openers Natthakan Chantham and Naruemol Chaiwai each hit 35 not out to set a target of 77 runs. Netherlands were in trouble at 9 for 4, and then 23 for 5 in the run chase, with Chanida Sutthiruang’s three wicket haul rocking the top and middle order. That the Netherlands could get to 47 was largely due to Babette de Leede scoring 20 not out off 21 balls.
Brief Scores: Thailand 79/0 in 9 overs (Natthakan Chantham 35*, Naruemol Chaiwai 35*) beat Netherlands 46/5 in 9 overs (Babette de Leede 20*; Chanida Sutthiruang 3-5) by 30 runs
Ireland beat Namibia by seven wickets at Arbroath, thanks to a professional run chase achieved with 5.3 overs to spare. The effort was kick-started by Gaby Lewis’s 23-ball 26 at the top and steered to the end by Kim Garth, who finished unbeaten on 22 off 29 while chasing a target of 84. Mary Waldron also contributed with 33 off 30 balls but got out where the scores were tied. It turned out to be a good toss to win for Ireland, who put Namibia in and restricted them to 83 for 9 in 20 overs. Petro Enright was the top scorer with 20 off 33 balls while Eimear Richardson picked 2 for 10. Regular wickets ensured that Namibia never had the momentum for a match-winning total.
Brief Scores: Namibia 83/9 in 20 overs (Petro Enright 20; Eimear Richardson 2-10) lost to Ireland 86/3 in 14.3 overs (Mary Waldron 33, Kim Garth 22*) by 7 wickets
Kathryn Bryce starred with bat and ball as Scotland breezed past United States in another rain-truncated game. Captain Bryce’s decision to bat at a time when the sun played peekaboo behind the clouds may have been questioned had she not stepped up to the plate with a composed unbeaten 29 that formed the bedrock of the hosts scoring 60 in their alloted seven overs. Claudine Beckford claimed three wickets for US but was unable to keep the score down to chaseable limits.
USA attempted to throw their bats at the target but that took them only as far as 30/5. Bryce picked up 2 for 6 in her side’s 30-run win.
Brief scores:Scotland 60/3 in 7 overs (Kathryn Bryce 29*; Claudine Beckford 3-26) beat United States 30/5 in 7 overs (Kathryn Bryce 2-6) by 30 runs.
