Manchester United are set for a busy transfer window with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperate to land at least five fresh faces this summer.
The 46-year-old believes his side require strengthening in every area after a nightmare campaign under both himself and predecessor Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United already look set to sign at least one player in the form of Daniel James, who has agreed personal terms ahead of a move to Old Trafford.
Yet the Manchester Evening News have opened up on their failed attempts to land one player.
The star, who is a winger, is unnamed by the report.
It is claimed United enquired about bringing them to Old Trafford but the international star instead chose to sign for a Champions League club instead.
United, months ago, thought they would be playing in Europe’s top club competition next term.
But they now face missing out on targets due to their determination to play at the highest level.
The MEN say that, regarding James, he is not expected to be a starter.
The Wales international’s best position is on the left where the Red Devils already have Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez.
But he could be deployed on the right instead with United short on numbers in that area.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, recently revealed what he was looking for in the transfer market.
The United manager said: “We’ve touched upon it.
“We’ve tried to educate our players and our kids to be proper people. In my years, the best players have always been the best people.
”You have to have that value system – do you say that? A certain kind of attitude about you to make a Manchester United player.
“You have got to have qualities and our fans want to see exciting players. We want to get up from our seats. You see defenders who defend, like that’s their life, that’s the most important thing.
”When we go to press with Jesse [Lingard] and Marcus [Rashford], in the games against Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Chelsea, when we start these games, our fans clap a striker making a tackle.
“That’s the way it’s been and in our culture. You have to have that work ethic and we’re scouting the market trying to find the right ones.”
