Matteo Darmian is set to join the summer exodus from Manchester United to Italy after agreeing to join Palma for around £2million.

The Italian international is set to join Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling who have all moved to Serie A clubs.

Darmian, 29, who was entering into the final year of his Old Trafford deal has been a target for Inter Milan, Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio this summer.

He has won the FA Cup and Europa League after moving to United from Torino for around £12m four years ago.

But he didn’t appear at all for the club in any competitions last season making 92 appearances in all competitions during his time in the North West.

Darmain has agreed to personal terms with Parma and hopes to get his career back on track once he has completed a medical.

“I’m happy to be back home, it’s an important opportunity,” Darmian said upon touching down in his home country.

“It’s certainly an important opportunity to get back into the Italy team.”

Asked why he allowed Smalling and Sanchez to leave for Italy in loan deals earlier this week, Solskjaer said: “It just came up in the last couple of days and it’s an opportunity for Chris.

“We sat down and discussed it and at the moment we have six centre-backs and I couldn’t promise Chris regular football.

“He’s on the plane over now and he will enjoy the experience over there. Not many English players have the chance to play in Italy and I’m sure he will come back stronger and better for it.

“Alexis needed to go. He’s been here for 18 months and it’s not really worked out for him.

“For him to restart and get himself playing regularly and scoring goals, that will only benefit everyone in the end.”
