Man Utd assistant Michael Carrick reveals why Solskjaer MUST stay, his job is on the line | Football | Sport

The Norwegian has made giant steps to earning himself a permanent contract as the next United boss.

Since arriving in December to replace Jose Mourinho he has tasted defeat just twice.

Solskjaer also masterminded one of United’s finest European nights when his side missing ten first team stars came back from the depths of elimination to beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1.

The triumph set up a Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona and a return to the Nou Camp, a ground littered with great memories for the former striker.

Solskjaer’s assistant Michael Carrick believes the impact his former team mate has made at Old Trafford stands him in good stead of landing the job permanently.

“It’s gone as well as anyone could have hoped for,” he told ESPN FC.

“The start we had at Cardiff was essential and then to go to Tottenham and win was massive. It’s just snowballed from there.

“He’ll have to stay because I need to keep my job! I don’t think you’ll get many Manchester United fans or players who will say otherwise to be honest.”

It’s likely that any announcement will have to wait until the end of the season even if it maybe agreed behind closed doors.

United will be cautious that any unveiling now could disrupt momentum during the run-in.

Carrick was quick to defend Solskjaer and comparisons to their former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He [Solskjaer] is his own man,” he added.

“The boss [Sir Alex] is a massive influence on him, like he is with me.

“You’re influenced hugely over the years so there are strong similarities but he is his own man and he sees his own things. I wouldn’t want to be unfair on Ole.

“The boss is the boss, we all know that and in some ways he still is the boss but I think Ole has got to take an awful lot of credit for the position he’s in.”

United travel to Wolves in the FA Cup quarter-final this weekend.
