Van Dijk has shone in his first full season at Anfield and helped Liverpool battle for the Premier League title.
Sterling has done the same for Manchester City, with the two clubs battling it out at the summit of the table.
And the Daily Mail now report that Van Dijk has won the award ahead of Reds team-mate Sadio Mane, City stars Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero, and Chelsea ace Eden Hazard.
Van Dijk follows in the footsteps of team-mate Mohamed Salah with the Egyptian winning the prize last season.
He will pick up the trophy at the 2019 PFA Awards at Grosvenor House in London on April 28.
But before then, Van Dijk will be hoping Liverpool can get a firmer grip on the Premier League trophy.
They can be boosted tonight with City travelling to Manchester United in a crunch clash.
