Liverpool fans have mocked Manchester United by lending their support to Ed Woodward after the Red Devils’ chief hit back at criticism over recruitment at Old Trafford.

The executive vice-chairman has come under fire from United fans this season after a dismal opening to the campaign has left the 20-time Premier League winners in 18th place and in danger of dropping into the relegation zone this weekend.

A defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool could push Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men down to 19th in the table, a far cry from the glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson.

A large number of fans believe Man Utd’s fall from grace has come as a result of poor recruitment on Woodward’s behalf, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Angel Di Maria being brought into the club on astronomic wages, but then failing to perform.

Chilean Sanchez exited the club on loan this summer alongside Romelu Lukaku, but neither were replaced, leaving United light up front and driving supporters to question Woodward’s judgement.

But the Man Utd chief was defiant in his defence of the Premier league side’s transfer policy.

He said: “First of all, we are an incredible 141-year footballing institution with all that history, all that legacy, all that tradition and that tradition of success. That can never, ever change. We need to keep that protected.

“Then, like other football clubs, our commercial business allows us to reinvest in the football side. It’s how these two interact with each other at Manchester United that results in us having a competitive advantage in this area.

“What’s important is the commercial side is never allowed to take priority over the football side.”

His comments did not go down well with the Old Trafford faithful, however.

One fan wrote: “Can hit back all he likes… what he has done to the club is criminal. Absolute disgrace.”

While another added: “You laugh because otherwise you’d cry. If Liverpool finally win a Premier League title this year I hope they give a medal to Ed Woodward.”

A third fan wrote: “He thinks he’s Florentino Perez when he’s actually more Mike Ashley.”

But the Man Utd chief did receive support from an unlikely source – Liverpool fans.

The Reds hailed Woodward for his influence as the Man Utd fans fumed at executive vice-chairman.

One Liverpool fan tweeted: “I agree Ed, carry on fella doing a boss job.”

While another wrote: “He’s doing an outstanding job tbf. Never leave Lord Woodward.”

A third added: “Yep he’s right. Doing a fantastic job at the helm.”

“Doing a belting job,” tweeted another supporter.

A fifth fan wrote: “Ed Woodward the gift that keeps on giving.”
