Paarl Rocks will be missing the services of star batsman JP Duminy who has been ruled out of the 2019 edition of the Mzansi Super League due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the lead-up to the team’s season-opener against Cape Town Blitz on coming Sunday (November 10).
Duminy, 35, was diagnosed with a high-grade partial tear to his right hamstring after undergoing an MRI scan. Incidentally, he also missed the inaugural season of the league last year due to a hand injury.
Rocks captain Faf du Plessis said Duminy’s experience will be desperately missed: “JP brings a lot of value in a lot of different areas. His experience will be missed, especially by the younger guys,” du Plessis said. “I have full confidence in our team to bounce back from this. We have strengthened our batting this year and we’ll use this setback as motivation.”
Rocks had earlier suffered another major injury blow with batsman Aiden Markram sustaining an injury on the recent tour of India and subsequently being ruled out of the domestic T20 league. The team is due to pick Duminy’s replacement on Monday, a day after they launch their campaign, said coach Adrian Birrell.
“We will assess our options on Monday and then decide how best to replace JP,” Birrell said.
