Melbourne Renegades vs Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne

In what was a contest powered by the captains of both teams, Jessica Duffin’s 49-ball 75 overshadowed Corinne Hall’s unbeaten half-century as Melbourne Renegades registered a last-ball victory at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Saturday (November 9). Hobart Hurricanes posted a total of 150 for 5, which was chased down by the Renegades with four wickets in hand – the result of the game meant a switch between these two sides for the fifth and sixth spots on the points table.

The chase went awry for the Renegades right at the start as they lost three wickets inside the first four overs. Duffin and Josephine Dooley led a brief revival before the latter fell to Meg Phillips, leaving the Renegades struggling at 53 for 4 in the ninth over. Like her counterpart, Renegades captain Duffin led the rearguard effort to bring her team back on track, with her brisk half-century and her 78-run association for the fifth wicket with Courtney Webb bringing down the equation to 25 off the last four overs.

Duffin, though, was dismissed by Phillips in the 17th over, which was followed by a seven-run 18th over from Heather Knight – the equation reading a run a ball for the last two overs, and three for the final over. The Hurricanes, though, weren’t going to go down without a fight as Nicola Carey bowled two dot balls before accounting for Webb. Maitlan Brown and Georgia Wareham held their nerves and collected the remaining runs in singles, helping the Renegades register their third win in seven matches.

Earlier, after being asked to bat, the Hurricanes didn’t have the best of starts as they lost early wickets and could only manage 44 in the first eight overs, with Sophie Molineux bagging two of the four wickets to fall during this period. They, however, managed a good recovery thanks to Corinne Hall and Fran Wilson, who added 92 for the fifth wicket. While Wilson fell in the 18th over five short of a half-century, skipper Hall ended up unbeaten on 50 off 34, with Chloe Tryon’s brisk 12 also aiding in the Hurricanes finishing with a competitive total.

Brief scores: Hobart Hurricanes 150/5 in 20 overs (Corinne Hall 40*, Fran Wilson 45; Sophie Molineux 2-25) lost to Melbourne Renegades 151/6 in 20 overs (Jessica Duffin 75, Courtney Webb 33; Belinda Vakarewa 2-21) by 4 wickets.
