Around 80 firefighters were called to the scene in the borough of Hackney, east London. London Fire Brigade posted on Twitter: “Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been called to a fire on Harry Zeital Way in Hackney.
“More information to follow.”
It remains unclear whether anyone has been injured in the blaze.
A police spokesman confirmed officers are at the scene, but was unable to provide further details.
The building is a large five storey apartment block in Upper Clapton.
The fire appears to have climbed up wooden balconies on the outside of the building.
A Twitter user described a large bang being heard as top floor windows exploded.
Residents are now being told to move further away from the apartment block to stay safe.
