Chelsea news: Pulisic told to copy Hazard to help out Hudson-Odoi after injury return | Football | Sport

Christian Pulisic must learn to draw attention from opposing defenders like Eden Hazard did to form a powerful duo with Callum Hudson-Odoi, claims former Chelsea player Mario Melchiot.

Pulisic signed with the Blues last January from Borussia Dortmund just before the Stamford Bridge outfit were slapped with a season-long transfer ban by FIFA in the summer but has yet to stand out.

The winger has only managed to play one full match, against Sheffield United, and has been struggling to replicate his impressive performance against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup in August.

Melchiot, who spent five years at Chelsea, believes the USA international needs to learn from Hazard’s performances last season which led to a strong pair-up with Hudson-Odoi on the wings.

The Belgian star, who joined Real Madrid last summer, used to draw defenders on him from the left-hand side and that gave more space to the England international when he got the ball on the right.

The ex-Chelsea full-back believes Pulisic should adopt the same style as that would lead to a stunning duo with Hudson Odoi once the latter recovers from an Achilles injury.

Melchiot told Goal: “A good Hudson-Odoi would give me the most problems as a defender.

“If he can get back to where he was before the injury, I think he would be the most dangerous prospect Chelsea have.

“I like Hudson-Odoi.

“I was sad when he was injured, as it was at a crucial moment.

“The balance of the team was perfect.

“Hazard was on the left-hand side, drawing a lot of attention.

“Then, when Hudson-Odoi got the ball, he had a one-on-one.

“Pulisic will have to first to earn the attention of markers like Hazard did.”
