The review, written by popular history writer A.N. Wilson, provocatively described the book as “anathema to anyone with an ounce of common sense”. Mr Wilson was reviewing ‘The Victorians: Twelve Titans who Forged Britain’, which will be published on May 23. Mr Rees-Mogg is chair of the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG).

Writing in The Times Mr Wilson commented: “What a staggeringly silly book this is!

“Although it is called ‘The Victorians’, it contains no humorists and no humour.

“It has no musicians, no engineers, no John Stuart Mill, no Thomas Carlyle, no scientists, no painters, no poets and no cardinals.”

The book profiles 12 Victorians who Mr Rees-Mogg argues played important roles in Britain’s political and cultural history.

Those featured include Sir Robert Peel, former Conservative Party leader, ex-Foreign Secretary Lord Palmerston and lawyer and prominent opponent of Irish home rule Albert Dicey.

Only one woman, Queen Victoria, is included.

However the book received a more positive response from other reviewers.

Historian Andrew Roberts, author of a best-selling biography on Churchill, described it as a “full-throated, clear-sighted, well-researched and extremely well-written exposition of the Victorians and their values.

“Rees-Mogg’s choice of a dozen Victorian luminaries allows him to defend an era too often ignored or written off in British history, and to compare it to our modern day in a way that readers will find gripping but also chastening.”

Mr Rees-Mogg was a fierce critic of Theresa May’s EU exit deal.

However he did vote for it on March 29, when it appeared before Parliament for the first time, arguing Brexit could be watered down further if the agreement is rejected.

Mr Rees-Mogg has urged Theresa May to step down as Prime Minister, accusing her of presiding over a “complete vacuum of leadership”.
